Een 'space-opera' is misschien wel de beste omschrijving voor Philip Glass zijn opera 'The Making Of The Representative For Planet 8'. Deze opera, gebaseerd op een in 1982 verschenen science-fiction roman van de Engelse schrijfster Doris Lessing, was in 1989 te zien in de Stopera in Amsterdam. Naast Amsterdam was de opera alleen te zien in de Grand Opera in Houston, de Engelse National Opera en in Theater Kiel in Duitsland. De van Philip Glass bekende minimalistische stijl drukte duidelijk een stempel op de opera, ondersteund door een visueel overweldigend decor en prachtige kostuums.

Philip Glass is vooral bekend om zijn filmmuziek voor 'Kooyaanisqatsi' uit 1982 en 'Powaqqatsi' uit 1988. Maar ook aan de popmuziek heeft hij diverse bijdragen geleverd. Zo werkte hij op zijn in 1986 uitgebrachte album 'Songs For Liquid Days' onder andere samen met David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Vega, Linda Ronstadt en Paul Simon. Op het album 'Hearts And Bones' van Paul Simon is zijn ensemble te horen op het nummer 'The Late Great Johnny Ace'.
